Weekend Reads and Listens: Syd Gets Tubes in her Ears - AI Deflation Hoax and Healthcare Stuff
Happy Saturday everyone!
The Paul house was struck with the norovirus. Pretty much everyone was having spontaneous vomiting or diarrhea. Having three kids is fucking terrible sometimes. We are constantly sick from their little contaminated bodies. Onward.
This week I was in Boston for Statera board meeting as well as going to the LIFT AZ is an annual summit focused on creating a making a more “sophisticated investment ecosystem in Arizona.” I have no idea what that means and I will reserve my comments on the conference to those that ask me offline. Thursday my youngest Sydney had tubes put in her ears at a local ambulatory surgery center (more on that later). Below is a picture of my and Syd getting ready to go into surgery. These events created a short week for reading and learning.
That being said however our new associate Tristan did some bang up work on Ambulatory Surgery Centers which we will share in the coming weeks.

did an incredible substack on how AI will not be as deflationary as we might think. Why AI Won't Cause Unemployment This is an incredible piece that highlights how the most inflationary sectors in our economy are the ones subject to regulatory capture and stagnant innovation. Please read. Why your startup idea isn’t big enough for some VCs This is an older piece by Michael Dempsey of Compound VC about how market sizing affects venture investing. Amazing how TAM matters again.
Being a neo-phite healthcare investor I am digging into the work of Bessemer Venture Partners. They have some great pieces on healthcare investing. One of which is How to scale a health tech business to $100 million ARR and beyond
Another great by Besssemer article Benchmarks for growing health tech businesses
Kaiser+Geisinger: Our take on the formation of Risant Health: An article by the Advisory Board that goes into their opinions on the rational of the merger with two of the largest health systems in the country. I am not going to pretend like I know anything about this but this is creating some serious buzz in the health tech world.
Listens 🎙:
I loved this pod. It interviews three partners from Bessemer Venture Partners- one of the oldest VC firms in the United States. They talk all about their firm dynamics and investment culture. Super interesting.
Ben Hunt from Epsilon Theory talks a great deal about “fiat narrative” and the false messaging about the United States. It really was a much more optimistic take that gave me some hope amidst all the negative noise.
Have a great weekend everyone and see you on Monday!
Hug on Syd.
